ACT WORK KEYS:

Certificate of Proficiency for Massachusetts Teaching Assistants:

The Massachusetts Department of Education has endorsed the use of the ACT Work Keys Certification of Proficiency for Massachusetts Teaching Assistants through The Center for Business & Professional Development at HCC.

To meet the requirements of the No Child Left Behind federal legislation, teaching assistants (paraprofessionals) in Title I K-12 schools are required to either possess an associate degree, have earned at least 48 college credits, or pass an assessment that certifies the skills required to perform their jobs as paraprofessionals. The Massachusetts DOE has approved The Center's proposal to utilize the ACT Work Keys Certification of Proficiency for Teaching Assistants as the Assessment tool to certify those skills.

The assessment consists of three 50-minute assessment exams in the following topics: Reading for Information, Applied Mathematics, and Business Writing. Once a paraprofessional meets the required minimum scores on the three assessments, The Center will issue an Individual Skills Inventory (ISI) to the paraprofessional's school. The ISI is an evaluation instrument that will be used by a qualified observer at the school who will observe the paraprofessional performing their job and will rate the paraprofessional's skills using the ISI. The ISI will be evaluated by The Center and paraprofessionals who meet the minimum required ratings on the ISI will be issued an official Certificate of Proficiency. Those paraprofessionals who qualify for the Certificate will meet the requirements of the legislation.

Cost for the entire certification process, including the assessments, the issuance and evaluation of the ISI, and the certificate is $40.

Study Guides: The Center has available Study Guides for the three ACT Work Keys Assessments (Reading for Information, Applied Math, and Writing). Study Guides are available for $30 for the set of four study guides, including shipping. Bulk purchase discounts are available to schools, and school districts. Interested paraprofessionals should call The Center at 413/552-2112 for more information. MAP
