It Can Be Different: We believe that The Eden Alternative is a powerful tool for improving the quality of life for people who live in long-term care facilities. It is a new way of thinking about nursing homes and has the potential to remake nursing homes all over the country. Before that can happen, however, we need to teach others about what The Eden Alternative is and how they can use it to transform the facilities in which they work. We provide support for those who want to improve resident and staff quality of life by enlivening their environments and eliminating unnecessary medical therapies. The core concept of The Eden Alternative is strikingly simple: We must teach ourselves to see nursing homes as habitats for human beings, rather than as institutions for the frail and elderly. We must learn what Mother Nature has to teach us about the creation of vibrant, vigorous habitats. The Eden Alternative seeks to eliminate the three plagues of the long-term care institution--loneliness, helplessness, and boredom. We want to show others how companion animals, the opportunity to care for other living things, and the variety and spontaneity that mark an enlivened environment can succeed where pills and therapies fail. Our goal is to weave together that philosophy of The Eden Alternative with the practical applications and make it work in the real world of long-term care. Why take Eden Associate Training at HCC?
The Center is offering a further discount for facilities that send multiple participants to the training...Send 4 or more employees and we will take an additional $50 OFF the facility’s total training cost. Normally, sending people to Eden Alternative training in New York would cost an organization meals and out-of-state travel expenses. Meals are included and travel is local! William Thomas, M.D. |
The Eden Alternative: Running a long-term care facility is a very tough job. There’s too much regulation, too little reimbursement, and a chorus of complaints from residents, staff and family members. Maintaining your ideals in the face of these realities can be a real challenge. If you have ever wished that it could be different, we have good news. It can be. In 1991, Dr. William (Bill) Thomas, a Harvard educated physician, began work on an innovative approach to long-term care that infuses a conventional facility with energy, vitality and a love of life. Known as The Eden Alternative, this philosophy started in one small nursing home and has grown into an international movement. It is based on the simple realization that human beings are ill-suited to life in an institution. The Eden Alternative allows you to transform a conventional facility into a "Human Habitat". Facilities that have implemented the principles and practices of The Eden Alternative have demonstrated decreased staff turnover rates, decreased use of medications, decreased infection rates, and decreased resident mortality rates. Edenized facilities show increased family and community involvement, increased census, increased worker satisfaction, and an increase in favorable attention from local print and broadcast media.
