It Can Be Different:
We believe that The Eden Alternative is a powerful tool for improving the quality of life for people who live in long-term care facilities. It is a new way of thinking about nursing homes and has the potential to remake nursing homes all over the country. Before that can happen, however, we need to teach others about what The Eden Alternative is and how they can use it to transform the facilities in which they work. We provide support for those who want to improve resident and staff quality of life by enlivening their environments and eliminating unnecessary medical therapies.

The core concept of The Eden Alternative is strikingly simple: We must teach ourselves to see nursing homes as habitats for human beings, rather than as institutions for the frail and elderly. We must learn what Mother Nature has to teach us about the creation of vibrant, vigorous habitats.

The Eden Alternative seeks to eliminate the three plagues of the long-term care institution--loneliness, helplessness, and boredom. We want to show others how companion animals, the opportunity to care for other living things, and the variety and spontaneity that mark an enlivened environment can succeed where pills and therapies fail. Our goal is to weave together that philosophy of The Eden Alternative with the practical applications and make it work in the real world of long-term care.

"The traditional nursing home gives you three meals a day, but no reason to live. We must get people hooked on living. That will result in fewer medications and lower mortality rates."
William Thomas, M.D.
The Eden Alternative:
"People in nursing homes often die of loneliness and boredom. This shouldn’t happen to anyone. It is 100 percent preventable."

Running a long-term care facility is a very tough job. There’s too much regulation, too little reimbursement, and a chorus of complaints from residents, staff and family members. Maintaining your ideals in the face of these realities can be a real challenge. If you have ever wished that it could be different, we have good news. It can be.

In 1991, Dr. William (Bill) Thomas, a Harvard educated physician, began work on an innovative approach to long-term care that infuses a conventional facility with energy, vitality and a love of life. Known as The Eden Alternative, this philosophy started in one small nursing home and has grown into an international movement. It is based on the simple realization that human beings are ill-suited to life in an institution. The Eden Alternative allows you to transform a conventional facility into a "Human Habitat".

Facilities that have implemented the principles and practices of The Eden Alternative have demonstrated decreased staff turnover rates, decreased use of medications, decreased infection rates, and decreased resident mortality rates. Edenized facilities show increased family and community involvement, increased census, increased worker satisfaction, and an increase in favorable attention from local print and broadcast media.

Bring the Eden Alternative to your facility through training at HCC:
  • Create an environment that imbues life with variety and spontaneity
  • Build a human habitat that is alive with plants, companion animals, and children
  • Provide residents with easy access to companionship by promoting close and continuing contact between the elements of the human habitat and the residents
  • Balance the institution’s point of view with the needs of the human habitat mode
  • Promote residents’ participation in the daily round of activities that are necessary to maintaining the human habitat
  • De-emphasize the programmed activities approach to life
  • Place the maximum possible decision-making power in the hands of those closest to the residents
  • Understand that "Edenizing" is not a program, but a never-ending process
  • Place the need to improve residents’ quality of life over and above the inevitable objections to change
